The Roadmap to Central Finland creative economy 2013+ puts together the common will, recognizes the creative industries actors and outlines each actors’ tasks for future development of creative economy in Central Finland.

In our definition creative economy refers to the added value that creative industries’ products, services or skills can yield to other sectors. For instance when a hardware store aims to increase the value of its business by investing in service design, it is taking advantage of the creative economy.

The roadmap shows in visual form what is creative economy, what sectors and organizations are involved in and responsible for its development and how they should do it.

The roadmap also includes statistical information of creative businesses in Central Finland. It shows how many companies and other service providers there are in each municipality and which sub-sectors they represent. The statistic data is collected from official statistics of 2010. In Standard Industrial Classification (national version of NACE) creative industries can be found under eight headings. The data has been collected on 5-digit level, and all non-creative businesses have been removed. Finally, the data has been re-classified to match with the commonly accepted definition of creative industries.

The visual design of the roadmap has been produced by using the method of graphic facilitation instead of graphic design. The statistics are visualized by using infographics. The bird, wood grouse, is the emblem of the region. The size of the bird indicates the total amount of creative businesses in a municipality, and different colours of the tail feathers represent various subsectors of creative industries. The locations of the birds indicate the location of each municipality on the map of the region.

CREATIVE REGION LINZ & UPPER AUSTRIA Ltd, an important regional partner of the Regional Government Upper Austria in the CREA.RE project, organizes in Linz from 5 to 8 June 2013 a large event focusing on “Identity City Lab _ creating multiple urban identities”

With the Identity City Lab _ creating multiple urban identities the CREATIVE REGION gathers in Linz local and international experts in city planning and development as well as in creative, experimental urbanism.

The lectures serve as an input session for three workshop days with the Madrid Architecture group Ecosistema Urbano focusing on the issues related to the harbour area and bring into local discussions the development of urban strategies. Linz has a multitude of cultural actors (Ars Electronica, Lentos, Tabakfabrik, etc.) – these should be confronted with the theme of participation through permanent/temporary urban interventions and intermediary use and in this way build a bridge to the city development and identity building.

Berlin. The Bertelsmann Foundation as one of the most established social and cultural foundations in Germany awarded the Crea.re partner Green Workshop Wendland as an outstanding example for public engagement of regional companies and creatives.

The chairwoman of the foundation, Liz Mohn, presented the award at a gala on February 26th in Berlin.
More then 130 initiatives from all over Germany had applied in the competition „My good example“. The Green Workshops’ interdisciplinary matching of local companies with young creatives from universities in the metropolitan regions convinced the Jury exspecially with its innovative approach. Thus „the companies commit themselves to their region, where they can achieve a visible change and help locally to strengthen the social dedication and involvement“ stated Liz Mohn at the ceremony.
With this encouraging support the Green Workshop Wendland now plans the next steps of the project, like an international Innovation Camp in September and various projects on the creation of local and sustainable products in the region.

More information on the award and a videoclip about the project can be found on the website of Bertelsmann Foundation – www.bertelsmann-stiftung.de. Further articles, pictures and documentations on the website of the Green Workshop itself – www.gruene-werkstatt-wendland.de.

In 2012/2013 the Local Support Group for creative sectors, established in the framework of the “CREA.RE” project, intensified its activities. In the first quarter of 2012 the group has been significantly enlarged including representatives of all major institutions in Poznan dealing with the creative sectors.

The LSG gathered different local institutions active in the field: local and regional authorities (Poznan City Hall, Marshall Office of the Wielkopolska Region, Association of Poznań Metropolis, District Councils), universities (Poznan University of Technology, University of Arts in Poznań, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań), institutions of regional importance, NGOs and companies representing the creative sectors („Zamek” Cultural Centre, Pro Design, SPOT. Foundation, Poznań International Fair, Art Stations Foundation).

In the first half of 2012 the group held two general meetings, moderated by an University expert on the creative sectors, prof. T. Stryjakiewicz. The most important topics approached during the discussions were:

analysing the diagnosis of the specific situation of the various sub-sectors of the CCI in Poznan and Wielkopolska Region, based on the research carried out by university experts;

discussing possible actions that could be undertaken to support the creative sectors and the inclusion of these propositions in a Local Action Plan;

networking and defining possible cooperation opportunities between local and regional actors in the framework of the Local Support Group.

In the second quarter of 2012 the group worked in parallel in smaller working teams assigned to specific topics, that were defined as crucial from the perspective of the group:

group on information and promotion activities for the creative sectors

group on activities in creative public space

group on research and monitoring of the creative sectors

Subsequently, the work continued in the form of a series of six workshops for the Local Support Group members. The participants worked on ideas pointed out in the Local Action Plan and developed propositions for four projects with detailed conceptions, including goals and problem description, proposition of concrete actions, division of tasks between interested institutions etc. The workshops were moderated and summarized by a professional project trainer. Approximately 60 participants attended the workshops over six days.
The projects developed during the workshops:

Educational activities in the field of public space

Artistic Residencies Programme for „Zamek” Cultural Centre

Developing an information and promotion platform for the cultural sector

Designing public space with elements of small architecture

The results of the work of the Local Support Group, meetings, working groups and workshops, were incorporated into Local Action Plan for creative sectors in the Poznan and Wielkopolska region. The plan is now in the process of being published and will be ready in paper and electronic version by the end of March 2013. Also in March the group will meet for the “summary event” concluding its works in the framework of CREA.RE project.

The LSG participants were content with the way of cooperation – positive opinions concerned especially workshops. It was innovative and effective to gather people from diverse institutions to get to know each other and work on common problems perceived from different perspectives. It is important to emphasise that the Local Support Group will carry on its functioning beyond the CREA.RE project, mainly within the thematic groups that will continue working on common projects.

Within the Crea.Re project MDA has prepared workshops, where stakeholders from the cultural and creative sectors from the Podravje region were learning how to prepare business plans. The workshops were led by a successful business man, Marko Podjavoršek, who has a lot of experience in the field of marketing and was one of the most active stakeholders in the regional Crea.Re workshops since the beginning of the project.

He shared his knowledge on how to prepare good business plans and path the way to make your idea into a model which can be presented to institutions that would financially support the idea (either by loans, donations, or other means of funding).

For most participants this was a rather new approach, since they were always primarily concerned with their creative and/or cultural production, not realizing all the potentials it has for marketing and above all not thinking within the framework of the bureaucracy, investor, or other financial supporters, but only in terms of the product they are offering and which they hope the general public will accept and like in such an amount it would allow them to develop a business around it. And that’s exactly what the creative sector said it needed!

Interacció is a biennial meeting point for professionals in the field of culture, heads of cultural departments at public administrations and cultural agents, being a reference for discussion and reflection. Interacció brings together politicians, managers, artists, thinkers and researchers from both public private sector, as well as associations. The initiative has a long history dating back to 1984.
This year, Interacció is focusing its reflection on the public value of culture and the tools to manage it.
The new edition includes an Online Platform that provides content to the different workspaces as well as facilitates their communication. This online tool is filled in with reflection issues, best practice presentations, working groups and debates addressed to the creative and cultural agents. Two CREA.RE good practices have been already presented in the platform.

In addition, Interacció has launched a call for proposals with the aim of giving maximum visibility to local cultural organizations around the world, hosting the presentation of projects for both public and private sectors, related to any of the fields and issues proposed.
Three calls for proposals have been launched:

Presentations in person, during May 2013 event at CERC
Participation at Project Fair that will take place during May 2013 event at CERC.
Video presentations to be published on Interacció’s Online Platform.

Finally, in May 2013, cultural community will be called to meet in Barcelona, at Centre d’Estudis i Recursos Culturals (CERC), in a “traditional face to face” event.
